Interlibrary Loan of the day

Captain ILL is still hovering on the razor-sharp edge between good and evil, but this book, called simply Dog, makes the Captain teeter a bit towards the light. The cover photo is a good example of all the pictures of cute little cuddly wuddly doggies in this book. How can a supervillain plan his conquest of the world when there's a ginormous doggie tongue waiting to cover his face with doggie saliva? Captain ILL feels that this country would be much better served if Barney and Miss Beazley were replaced by a dog with a much bigger tongue.

A New Poll

Captain ILL is suffering a crisis of conscience. After his recent betrayal, he gave in to the temptation to take vengeance and had a lot of fun doing it. Now he has to decide if he should continue as Captain ILL, or turn to the dark side and become a supervillain. You can help him make this important decision by voting in the poll at the bottom of this blog.

Payback ...

Captain ILL knows some pretty sinister supervillains, and one of them owed him a favor. Watch as Gorilla Grodd rampages through Groovelily's office.

Assegnazione numero nove:

Ho trovato un video su Youtube biblioteche a cui ho incorporato qui. Potrei usare Hulu o Fancast di volta in volta perché mi piace la TV. Questi siti potrebbe essere utile ad una libreria se le persone che amano TV entrare in libreria.

Mixed emotions ...

Captain ILL is not sure how he should feel today. On the one hand, his secret lair has been revealed, as well as, apparently, his secret identity. On the other hand, he was notified this morning that he is finally being recognized by Time magazine, and therefore the entire world, for his work in being a man. Is it time for Captain ILL to throw in the towel, now that he has achieved the ultimate recognition? Is being constantly hounded by paparazzi worth the enormous service he provides? What's a humble, yet incredibly amazing Captain to do?

The Lair

It's never wise to leave your lair unattended and it's really not a good idea to give your password to individuals with questionable scruples. At first we were going to choose the Daily ILL. But then we thought, what the heck, let's give everyone a peek into the secret lair. From the harem-inspired shawl that shields the light to the ransom note posted on the wall to the inflatable palm, the Captain is always on the cutting edge of interior design.

Taak nummer acht: Facebook

Civil Registration of Orleans Parish Births, Marriages and Deaths 1790-1833 is one of those big thick books you'd wish to have in your shirt pocket as a bullet comes whizzing toward your heart. Captain ILL can only imagine the giddy delight of a genealogist feverishly paging through this enormous volume to discover that their ancestor was: "about 51 years old, a grocer, residing on Toulouse Street at the corner of the Basin Carondelet; recorded on May 29, 1833". Captain ILL doesn't concern himself too much about his ancestors since, in the words of Richard Dawkins, "All earthly living things are certainly descended from a single ancestor." The Captain figures he'll just wait until they finger that single ancestor, and not worry about all the folks in the middle.

A small digression ...

While we wait for today's batch of ILLs to be delivered, Captain ILL will embark on a slight digression since lunchtime is approaching, albeit at a slug-like pace. If anyone out there has been to Wendy's recently, they might have noticed that the Big Bacon Classic has been replaced by something called the Baconator. The Captain made the mistake of ordering one of these greasy disasters and felt sick the rest of the afternoon. The bacon was caked together and honestly looked like something you would find in a child's toy kitchen. The rest was too disgusting to describe, so just have a look at the picture instead. Many of you out there may be wondering what Captain ILL's secret weakness is ... well, it wouldn't be a secret if he told you, but please keep Baconators at a safe distance. And yes, the Captain did eat the whole burger; he is an American after all.

Interlibrary Loan of the day

The ILL of the day is Moon Node Astrology. To be honest, Captain ILL is pretty baffled by regular astrology, let alone the moon node variety. All those dates and signs and zodiacs and all that is far too complex for an ILL Captain to keep track of. But the most baffling part of all is the whole bit about the precession of the equinoxes. Of course everyone knows that the earth wobbles a bit as it rotates. This wobbling, or precession, means that the signs of the zodiac shift 1 degree every 71.6 years. Thus the entire zodiac has shifted by nearly an entire sign since all this zodiacal stuff was developed. This means that Captain ILL is not actually a Virgo, as he was led to believe all his life, but a Leo!

So You Think You Know Harry Potter is very definitely not approved by J.K. Rowling as the green tab on the cover is very careful to point out. It is, however, packed with over 1000 wizard quiz questions. Here is a sampling: "Was Ron's new wand nine inches, eleven inches, or fourteen inches?" or "Both Harry and Lord Voldemort's wands have a feather from which creature?" or even "From what kind of wood was Harry's father's wand made?" Captain ILL doesn't believe that all the questions are about wands, but the random selection he chose seems to indicate a preponderance of them. Granted, wands are very important but the Captain can't help but wonder if this wand-centric attitude was the reason for Ms. Rowling's disapproval.

Thanks once again to Groovelily for modeling today's ILL of the day: The Oswego Daily Times. This was a newspaper published from 1887-1925 in, of all places, Oswego, New York. This particular reel of microfilm contains issues from Oct 1, 1895 through Dec 31, 1895. By Captain ILL's reckoning, that was over 100 years ago! The good Captain doesn't know anything about Oswego, except that it sounds just like the noise he makes when he sneezes. Hopefully Betty Bureaucrat will have driven through this town at some time, and she can fill us in.

Interlibrary Loan of Friday

Captain ILL was off doing secret ILL stuff on Friday, and his trans-temporal messaging widget is broken so this posting is a few days late. The Captain almost feels like he's cheating by choosing His Only Obsession as the ILL of the day yet again, but it was such a popular choice before, and it has such a nice thigh on the cover, the Captain feels the duplication is warranted. Here's what the back cover has to say: "After her father's disappearance, Gwen Arnell was desperate to find him - even follow his route to a legendary island. She would do anything to shield him from harm, but who would protect her from the sensual private investigator who'd just become her unlikely rescuer?" It seems obvious that the thigh must belong to Gwen Arnell, but what is that mysterious object strapped to it? Perhaps Schwager? can fill us in since this is one of his favorite books.

Today's ILL of the day is a blast from Captain ILL's past. The Big Jump and Other Stories is a book that Captain ILL remembers reading way back when he was a mere Corporal ILL. It's hard to believe that Captain ILL was young once, but it's books like this that made him into the great man he is today. The story takes place way back in the olden days when only kings were allowed to have dogs as pets. This is the real stuff ! The hero of the story, with the help of a cute little puppy, finds a loophole in this ridiculous law and gets a dog of his own by jumping to the very top of the king's palace. If anyone out there wants a cute little doggie of their very own, they only have to jump over to the collection development blog where there are still a few puppies left in the Great Collection Development Puppy Giveaway.

Interlibrary Loan of the day

Today's ILL of the day is dedicated to BowlingWidow who returned to work today from a trip to the Grand Canyon. Lasting Light - 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography arrived just in time to celebrate her return. Although the book jacket boasts: "This impressive collection of more than 125 years of Grand Canyon photography is complemented by captivating profiles of 23 of the finest Grand Canyon photographers.", Captain ILL has a hard time seeing much of a change in the Grand Canyon over those 125 years, except that colors seemed to be much more muted back in the old days. In any case, the canyon is undeniably grand and the book is as well, weighing a whopping 4 lbs 1 oz.

Interlibrary Loan of the day

Exactly ten books arrived on the ILL desk today, so there wasn't much to choose from, which makes it all the more wonderful to find this little gem in there. Batman: The Dynamic Duo Archives Volume 1 is a volume of illustrated adventures of one of Captain ILL's colleagues. Many of you out there may be wondering how fighting crime could possibly compare to the illustrious job of processing ILL requests, but Captain ILL doesn't look down on Batman merely because fighting crime isn't as important as ILL. We all have a job to do, and Batman seems to to fairly well at his, though I doubt he could last long at the ILL desk. And even though there isn't a single illustrated volume out there detailing Captain ILL's exploits, your beloved Captain isn't bitter and certainly isn't responsible for all the torn and mutilated pages inside today's ILL of the day.

Interlibrary Loan of the day

An Introduction to the Meaning and Structure of Physics is not nearly as big as Essential Sources in the Scientific Study of Consciousness but it more than makes up for it by including tons and tons of equations. Betty the Bureaucrat (who picked this book today) wanted me to make sure I pointed out that this book was published in 1968, and is probably hopelessly outdated. However, since it is an introduction, Captain ILL feels that it covers all the necessaries without getting bogged down by nonsense like baryon asymmetry or quantum chromodynamics. All the old favorites are here: Maxwell's equations, Feynman diagrams, and of course the Lorenz transformations. So check this one out if you care to learn about the universe or the things in it, or even if you just want to make yourself horribly confused. Oh, and thanks to the Cardboard Queen for holding the book for today's photo.

Interlibrary Loan of the day

Today we have a special treat. Essential Sources in the Scientific Study of Consciousness is a great big book with nearly 1200 pages. Whenever I see a book like Essential Sources in the Scientific Study of Consciousness, I always wonder how it weighs in poundage wise. Well, in this case, Essential Sources in the Scientific Study of Consciousness weighs in at 3 pounds, 10.6 ounces (thanks to the cardboard queen for this figure). This means that each page of Essential Sources in the Scientific Study of Consciousness weighs around 0.05 ounces. That's pretty heavy material! However, with a title like Essential Sources in the Scientific Study of Consciousness, you expect some pretty heavy reading. For some reason I've run out of space here, but pick up a copy of Essential Sources in the Scientific Study of Consciousness if you need a big thick book to impress your friends and neighbors.

Interlibrary Loan of the day

The Batmobile, the Munster's Coach, and the Bugaloos' Buggy all find representation in Barris TV & Movie Cars. This is what Batman has to say: "I drove the world's most famous car. It did its tricks because of my pal, George Barris. Thanks, George." Batman is quite correct, the Batmobile kicks $#*%, and the ILLmobile pales in comparison. The Captain is going to have to talk with Betty the Bureaucrat about having the ILLmobile budget increased by about $100,000 next year.

*Yet another special update*

Thanks to thisandthat we have another example of a vampire animal. Please feel free to send Captain ILL all the pictures of vampiric animals you like because you can't get enough pictures of vampiric animals. Except bats ... they're creepy.

*Special ILL of the day update*

The ILL of the day from March 28, 2008 has been returned. Before sending it back to the owning library, I located the information on the Glutton's Robe since there was so much interest. It is a "Robe worn by Qus" and provides the following bonuses: "Strength +1, Magic +1, Defense +41, Magic Def +4". It's not the greatest of the Final Fantasy IX robes (this honor falls to the Robe of Lords), but it's not the worst either. I guess that makes it the middle robe.

Captain ILL suffers from a terrible allergy to cats, and today's ILL of the day makes him glad he doesn't own one. Shadow of the Vampuss is a re-telling of Dracula with all the characters replaced by cats. From the back cover: "Intrigue, bloodlust and High Victorian melodrama played out with a cast of glorious cats. Not recommended for under-age kittens!" This lavishly illustrated book is best read during daylight hours with a crucifix close at hand; the images of Count Scratchula are truly bloodcurdling. Anyone wondering how a cat could possibly contract vampirism should also check out You Suck - A Love Story by Christopher Moore.

Everyone Knows What a Dragon Looks Like was written by Jay Williams and Illustrated by Mercer Mayer. It's the story of a boy named Han from the city of Wu on the northern border of ancient China. The city is threatened by the Wild Horsemen from the north, and the city elders decide that the most practical thing to do is pray to the Great Cloud Dragon to come and save them. When the Great Cloud Dragon arrives in the form of a little fat man, the rulers are rude to him, and the city is nearly destroyed by the Wild Horsemen except that Han knows his manners and is polite and respectful to the little fat man who is, in fact, a dragon. The dragon saves the city for Han's sake, and the rulers, missing the point entirely, think the lesson to be learned is that dragons look like small, fat, bald old men. Captain ILL is pretty sure that this is not the real lesson to be learned from this story, but who is he to question the rulers of Wu?

The Ill of the day today is Trickle Treat: Diaperless Infant Toilet Training Method. This innovative title has a few blurbs on the back page: "No undignified re-learning, no traumatic accidents during pre-adolescence!" and "Less mess, no financial investment - all it costs is your love and some time!" and finally "The most environment-friendly method possible - conserve resources, dispense with diapers!". Based on these statements, this seems like a very enthusiastic book, and it's goal, doing away with diapers, seems a very worthy one. Who likes diapers anyway? Or, rather, who likes used diapers? Captain ILL hasn't read this book, but a problem immediately occurs to him. How the author deals with this problem will have to remain a mystery, because Captain ILL finds the subject extremely icky.

Interlibrary Loan of the day

Friday's ILL of the day is The Awful German Language by Mark Twain. Now Captain ILL's fluency in German is thanks to Google's language translation tool, so he can't speak for the accuracy of this title. In fact, the title isn't how this item received ILL of the day honors. This item is the ILL of the day because it's not even clear why this is a book. Captain ILL is only guessing at the mysterious origins of this book, but as far as he can tell it goes something like this: some time ago, someone at Duke University takes photographs of appendix "D" of A Tramp Abroad. They then staple them together and tape pieces of cardboard to the front and back and call it a book. Then they catalog the thing and years later a Sno-Isle patron finds it in Worldcat and fills out a RINC for it instead of checking out A Tramp Abroad which Sno-Isle owns 10 copies of in large and regular print. What a strange and convoluted world we live in!

Further development in the mystery ILL ...

Breaking news in the Mysterious ILL story. It turns out that Mitchell, South Dakota is home to the famous Corn Palace. This information was provided by Betty the Bureaucrat, a recent arrival on the blog scene. Welcome Betty!

Today's ILL of the day is Generation of Swine by famed gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. My first introduction to Dr. Thompson was through the movie Where the Buffalo Roam where he was portrayed by Bill Murray. Mr. Murray was so hilarious that it almost made up for the fact that Gonzo the Great wasn't even in the movie. In fact, as far as I can tell, there is no apparent similarity between Dr. Thompson and Gonzo the Great except possibly an inordinate love of chickens. I am I the only one who feels that these two freaks should get together? Perhaps staring in some sort of buddy movie?

Plants That Merit Attention: Volume 1 - Trees seems to be a book about trees. The New York Times notes: "The book merits space on the bookshelf of any serious gardener as a reference.", so it must be a very good book about trees. It turns out that the trees I planted in my backyard are properly termed "x Cupressocyparis leylandii" and will become attractive specimens in 25 years. I had hoped for quicker progress than that, but patience, like trees, needs cultivating.

Mystery Resolved!

The mystery ILL from March 31st has finally been identified! After a bit of cajoling, Captain ILL got the Mitchell Public Library to admit that they mailed us an empty bag. They were sufficiently chastised that they immediately agreed to attempt a second mailing of the book: His Only Obsession. If there are any further developments you can be sure I will post them here.

Interlibrary Loan of the day

Today's ILL of the day is The Adventures of Groovy Lily in the Land of the Baking Sun and Waterslides. I couldn't locate a cover image for this one, but the back cover blurbs: "Join Lily and her trusty sidekicks in her latest and greatest adventure yet! Be amazed as she explores strange and exotic locales searching for the the fabled Perfect Pair of Shoes! Cringe in terror when she escapes the clutches of the sinister Doctor Badger and narrowly evades the terrible Troll!" This sounds like an incredibly exciting story; I wonder if there's an audio book version?
